It’s funny in the last couple weeks when I’ve thought about doing a year in review on the blog I had no idea where to start. Then Brandon asked me for some photos for the RVA 2008 year in review issue and I went straight to my Flickr set page. Duh, everything I did this year is basically captured there. Then I started looking at photos from 2007 and was a little surprised that they were from 2007, really the entire year of 2008 went by that fast?
2008 for me really meant that I figured out how much I really loved photography, it’s always been something I enjoyed doing (since before high school) but this year I really realized how I want to make it something I do every single day.
I picked up a couple new lenses and a flash this year so I was able to experience a new level of taking photos. I also really realized that you can have as much gear in the world as you want, but it’s truly about what you do behind that camera that matters.
This past year included oodles of dance party pictures, lots of pictures of Landmines and messing around some with my Lomo cameras. I did a project for a trend reporting company based in L.A. where they found on me on Flickr and asked to be part of it. In the last part of the year I started to get work published, asked to do the Sticky Rice ads (including the one that will be the back cover of the VICE Guide to DC/RVA!), and now maybe doing some freelance catalogue work.
As far as travel goes, I got to do a fair amount this year. I started my 2008 in Boston with my roommate Margaret at the Hard Rock cafe seeing the band Bang Camaro, a 20 peice rock band of sorts.

In February Alex and I took a little roadtrip to Philadelphia, it was the first time I’d been there and what a cool little city.
Hung around in Richmond until June, went home to Virginia Beach for a few days, and started this blog. Came back to Richmond, got on a plane and met Vildan and Alex in NYC. I hadn’t been up there since high school (which is kinda crazy I know), so it was a lot of fun. We took a train to Philadelphia and hung out there for a couple nights as well. Alex and I ended up renting a car to drive home to Richmond and did a stop in Baltimore as well. In July, Liz, Derick and I hoped the Chinatown bus for another weekend in NYC. We went to Coney Island for a free music festival and barely made the bus home. While at Coney Island I took one of my most favorite pictures of all time.

In fact I’m going to be entering it into the Best of 2008 photo show which will begin February 1st and all through the month at Harrison Street cafe. I have to write up a little bio about myself which I have been putting off, but need to really be doing right now instead of this. Oh well.
August saw Best Friend’s Day, and while it’s an event that may be in town sometimes that day makes you feel a million miles away from home.
Fall began and I ended up quitting Urban Outfitters (very sad indeed) and going back to Starbucks, I need health insurance! I worked out a deal with my manager (a long time friend of mine) to not work the weekends. I believe that is when my schedule got insane.
Halloween weekend I ventured for the first time to The Fest in Gainesville, Florida. A full weekend of 200+ bands and cheap beer. I still to this date have not posted all the photos from the weekend. It was a blast and will hopefully be attending it this year.
In November the Sauce ladies and I finally fulfilled our promise to Raechel and went to Philadelphia to visit her. It was a weekend of fog, protests, drinking, dancing, Saucyness, and Missed Connections. I hope that I remain friends with these girls for a long time to come.

Thanksgiving, Christmas, my birthday and the New Year all came and went so quickly that I’m still kind of spinning from it all. Will you slow down world? Please?
As far as 2009 goes, this year you won’t stop seeing me and my work. I’m going to stop talking about going back to school and really sit down and make hard decisions on what I need to do to further my career as a photographer. Taking pictures at dance parties is fun and all, but in the end it’s not something that will A) pay the bills and B) make me really happy. Although to be fair to myself things are picking up for me in this department.
It’s only January 7th, and I already feel like 2009 is going to be tough year. Starting with Stu’s accident on New Year’s Eve, please look at his website and keep him in your thoughts and prayers. Also this economic situation is going to affect us a lot more than I think we are really prepared for, either because we aren’t paying attention, or we don’t want to see how bad it may be.
Because I don’t want to end this on such a negative note, in other positive news, my parents gave me a computer and an iPod for Christmas! Wee now I feel like I live in 2009 again! Portable music and the internet at home!
2009 don’t fail me.
